About This Place

Located in the heart of Columbus, Ohio, The Thurman Cafe stands as an iconic American restaurant and hamburger haven that has captured the loyalty of locals and visitors alike. This bustling, no-frills diner is celebrated not only for its massive, mouthwatering burgers but also for its warm, inviting atmosphere where every visit feels like a gathering among friends.

The Thurman Cafe’s menu reads like a love letter to classic American comfort food, boasting an impressive lineup of colossal burgers and crave-worthy sides. Championship contenders like The Thurman Burger and The Thurmanator Burger showcase juicy, grilled-to-perfection patties piled high with layers of cheese, crispy bacon, and the perfect blend of fresh toppings. For those seeking bold flavors, options like the Western Burger bring a smoky, savory punch, while the Mushroom Burger soaks your palate in earthy richness. Each bite is an explosion of textures and tastes, perfectly balanced and satisfying even the heartiest appetite.

Of course, no meal here would be complete without sampling Thurman’s legendary fries. These handcut fries are elevated to another level — whether smothered in gooey American cheese, topped with country sausage gravy, crispy bacon, and a runny egg in the All Day Breakfast Fries, or drenched in innovative sauce blends like the buffalo-bleu cheese infused ThurmaTeriGarlaYaki Sloppy Fries. Vegetarian or carnivore, the loaded fries are an irresistible companion to any burger order.

The Thurman Cafe also excels with its perfectly crispy boneless and jumbo chicken wings, breaded gourmet onion rings that crunch satisfyingly with each bite, and appetizers like Thurman Fried Pretzel Bites, which perfectly balance a salty, cheesy tang with their golden crust. Their bar menu complements these dishes with a solid selection of beers, including Guinness, adding a spirited edge to the dining experience.

Walk inside, and you’re greeted by a spirited, lively environment — a small yet vibrant space adorned with countless dollar bills plastered on the walls, setting a rowdy but welcoming tone. The soundtrack of upbeat music, combined with speedy and friendly service, creates an atmosphere where casual diners can relax and indulge without fuss. As many patrons have noted, The Thurman feels less like a restaurant and more like a beloved neighborhood institution, where the staff greet you like family and every meal is prepared with passion.

Real customer experiences reveal the heart behind the food. Ross Fischetti praises Thurman as “the ideal burger bar,” noting not just the quality food but the authentic vibe that sets it apart. Kristi Michel raves about the friendliness of the staff and the fried cheese curds that arrive hot and fresh. Banner330 shares awe at the gigantic burgers and attentive service, calling it one of the best places they’ve been to with a 10/10 atmosphere. Brendan Mulvaney highlights the substantial size and incredible taste, recommending these burgers especially to hungry college students or anyone craving big flavors. Justin D from Canada elevates the experience with a perfect “10 stars,” recounting how the burger joints’ offerings just get better each visit and emphasizing the familial warmth Victor—the server—brings to the table.

In short, The Thurman Cafe is a Columbus treasure that masterfully combines bold, satisfying flavors with an unmistakably genuine, homegrown spirit. If you’re hunting for gargantuan burgers that never compromise on taste, unbeatable sides, and a bar scene buzzing with life, this is the ultimate destination where every meal feels like a celebration of American diner culture done right.

The ideal burger bar, Thurman's is a small space packed with personality. From it's rowdy music to the dollar bills all over the walls, it is a fun place to be and its authenticity is not skin deep. It has a good beer menu, great fries, fantastic onion rings, and speedy yet friendly service. But, let's face it; you can find all these at other places. What is hard to find is a burger as good as Thurman's. I got the Thurman burger, which was packed with toppings. This made for an over-the-top burger which I thought was actually a knock against the glory that is the patty of this burger. It is perfect: juicy, flavorful, cooked-to-order, and huge (their burgers are all 3/4 lb). Next time, I have to get the western burger to really make the most of the incredibly tasty meat in that patty and I hope that is sooner rather than later.

I had the biggest burger I think Iv ever had. It was AMAZING everything was great. The service was great everyone was so nice and attentive! The only thing I’d change is when you get that 2 lbs burger if they brought it out on a pizza pan lol. Honestly one of the best places Iv been. Great atmosphere everything was 10/10. Not many places have such a high rating while having so many reviews. It’s for a reason you will not be disappointed!!!!!!!

Ok, these burgers are legit. If you are a hungry college student order a burger, if you are not- order one to split, seriously. 12oz to start, big burgers, but super tasty. We had several and all of them were good, get them med well (I usually like med rare, but these are big enough to take a little extra. A family owned dive bar kind of place. Not many tables so plan ahead, they won’t seat until everyone is present. Staff all share waiting duties, so at least there is always someone checking on you, but it is all made to order so nothing is fast, but it is worth the wait. Fries and onion rings were ok, as was the Ruben. Not bad, but stick with the burgers. Beers on tap and some in the can. Friendly staff, street parking. Gets busy fast. You will not go hungry (even splitting).

I need to double the stars to 10. First off I'd like to say I've ate here a few times and it gets better each time. The burgers are so big and cooked phenomenally. Has to be the best burger joint in Ohio. Victor is such a a great guy he was my server both times I've been there. I felt like I've known him my entire life and he treats you like family. If you go here please know it's worth the wait Everytime.

Super fun time at Thurmond Cafe. We had a 40 minute wait but it was totally worth it. Very eclectic place, nice and attentive servers, delicious food. Me and my wife shared a White Pizza Thin and the Thurman Burger, it was a ton of food. My favorite thing were the Battered Onion Straws. Would definitely come back to try more menu items.

An experience in Columbus I recommend to everyone. The cheese curds were fantastic and the Thurman burger, well it is massive and I could have split it with a few people! It will take 30 minutes or more to get your food. Do not be in a hurry to eat here.
